Chambers Clinic’s naturopathic doctors are trained acupuncturists who can resolve pain and other stubborn health conditions with Traditional Chinese Medicine

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is among the oldest healing practices in the world. Today it is widely used to ease and prevent pain as well as treat nausea, insomnia, addictions and other health concerns and diseases.

Chambers Clinic’s doctors are all proficient acupuncturists. In addition to medical science training, naturopathic physicians are trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as part of their curriculum and clinical rotations. We use it daily in our clinical thinking and practice.

How does acupuncture work?

As part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture seeks to restore and maintain health through stimulation of specific points on the body. Practiced for thousands of years, acupuncture uses solid, metallic needles to puncture the skin in an effort to balance the Qi (energy) of the body and improve its circulation. The Chinese believe that health symptoms begin to occur when one’s Qi gets out of balance.

Meridians, yin-yang and balance

Traditional acupuncture practice also recognizes that each vital organ has a “meridian” that courses in a specific path through the nervous system. Each organ and each of its corresponding meridians have specific actions and qualities. Meridians can be affected or become unbalanced when there are excess or deficiency states. A simple example would be that excess Qi in the Stomach might manifest as hiccups.

Tongue and pulse diagnosis

In addition to presenting symptoms, the state of one’s Qi and meridians is diagnosed by assessing the quality of the patient’s pulse, which is measured in three points on both wrists. Chambers Clinic practitioners also will look at the patterns and qualities on a patient’s tongue. A red tongue for example tells us that there is heat in the body that we would use specific points to cool.

Taken together, we develop a protocol of different points to access on the affected meridians to balance and harmonize Qi and relieve the underlying health issue.

Why should I get acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a well-studied and proven healing modality that treats a wide variety of conditions. Many of our patients say that acupuncture resolved a stubborn health issue when drugs or other forms of Western medicine could not. Depending on the condition, many of our patients feel a difference after one treatment. More chronic conditions take longer to resolve and are treated over a longer period of time.

Chambers Clinic offers acupuncture treatment performed by trained individuals and it is often used as part of a larger, overall treatment plan. The treatment itself does not hurt and tends to be very relaxing.
